I'm doing a Radiohead

Inspired by Radiohead and The Charlatans, I've decided to jump on the "free album" bandwagon.

Just watched Question Time on BBC and heard a load of people moaning about immigration, and the lack of border controls in the UK.

The moaners tend to be the same people who don't have a problem with the British Empire and, say, the invasion of Iraq. That would be, er, British people going over and settling in other countries. And, generally speaking, not in the back of lorries but in tanks or battleships.

The other complaint was that British identity is effectively being ruined or distorted by immigration.

Well, given that the so-called British identity (which Scots and Welsh people are arguably not that keen on anyway) is effectively the product of years of immigration - including, shock horror, a fair bit by the French - it's a fairly meaningless term.

English is a Germanic language anyway.

The whole thing is bollox.

My dad's English by the way, so this isn't some anti-British rant. And my mum's from Mullingar - actually I have an issue with Mullingar people being let into Dublin.


Sicko - Michael Moore's new film

A non-musical post this one.

Saw Michael Moore's film 'Sicko' last week. Which is about American healthcare - or lack thereof.

As is the case with Moore's other films it had some flaws, mainly to do with a bit of selectiveness with the truth and a 'well-I-never' faux surprise at the existence of publicly-funded, universal health systems in Britain and France. Yep, they do exist (although probably not for much longer, if in Britain the Blairite 'reforms' continue and in France, Sarkozy has his Thatcher moment).

But 'Sicko' is one of the most moving films I've seen. I was expecting it to deal with the issue of the millions of Americans who don't have health insurance (and thus no healthcare) but it dealt more with the Americans who do have health insurance...and no healthcare. In other words, it tells the stories of the victims of insurance companies - organisations who look for loopholes in insurance policies to actively deny people treatment and maximise profit.

For me there was one overwhelmingly touching part of the film. It dealt with a woman whose husband got cancer. He had health insurance, but despite his family having paid money to an insurance company for years, and having found an exact match for a life-saving bone marrow transplant, the company wouldn't pay for his treatment (on entirely spurious grounds). You see footage of the guy with his son, laughing and chucking a football about, and then you hear the wife explain how, after the final decision by the insurance company not to pay up, she came home to find him hiding in the toilet, crying. His pride made him repeatedly ask her to go away, but finally he explained that he wasn't afraid of death; he just didn't want to lose his wife and son. I can't explain how sad this was to see and hear, but it reduced me and my girlfriend to tears.

There are lots of other examples in Sicko of how American health insurance companies use red tape and loopholes to deny people life-saving treatment. The film makes it very clear that once you introduce the profit motive into health insurance, it is in the insurer's interest, wherever possible, not to pay claims. And that only leads to people who need healthcare being denied it. And the whole thing made my blood boil.

It makes me feel glad that in the UK we have the National Health Service, which, for all its flaws, does not make income a prerequisite for life-saving treatment, or require you to be insured by an unscrupulous company before it lets you past the doors of its hospitals. Sadly, whether the NHS will continue to offer good, free healthcare is open to question; both the main political parties in the UK seem quite determined to let private companies become more and more involved in running it. That will bring the aforementioned profit motive, and the results will be distastrous - if profit becomes king in the UK, healthcare will eventually become the preserve of the well-off; or, private companies (read 'middle-men') will charge the government (read 'tax-payers') so much that it becomes unaffordable, and the quality of care will deteriorate to the point of no return. Needless to say, some camera-friendly Tory (read David Cameron) will then pip up that it's time to privatise the whole thing - and bye bye free healthcare.

On singing...

I'm working on a new album right now. The 'difficult second album'. Except that I've been making albums for quite a while now and I reckon this one is technically my fourth. But I've only released one record, so as far as my adoring public is concerned, this is technically still my second album. Or second 'released' album. Except that I haven't released it yet.

Anyway, semantics aside, it has been quite difficult making it so far. I'm bloody busy right now (still plugging "Twisted City" and engaging in other miscellaneous activities which I won't bore you with). I'm making the record in two stages: one, I'm recording the guts of the songs in my own little studio; two, I'm taking the tracks to another studio and tarting them up - replacing drum machines with live drums, keyboards with real pianos, hell, I might even get somebody in to do lead vocals.

I jest of course; how could I deny my dulcet tones to my multitude of fans? But sometimes I think it would be much nicer to get somebody else in to do the singing. This is because for me vocals are by far and away the hardest part of recording - particularly when you're recording them yourself. It's the musical equivalent of staring at yourself in a mirror and looking anxiously for every sign of a grey hair, wrinkle or general blemish. Which of course I never do - I leave that to my girlfriend. She doesn't have any of the aforementioned, but every day she convinces herself that she does.

To make matters worse, I have a good microphone. It's one of the most expensive things I own - it cost me about 1,000 Euros - and as a result it captures things 'honestly'. Which means it captures bad notes very accurately. So you end up doing lots of takes. And then listening to them with the most critical pair of ears imaginable.

Fortunately though, modern recording technology is perfectly capable of making a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Anyway, the album is coming on a bit. I've got about 8 songs shaping up nicely. It's different to 'Twisted City' - I can't explain why, except that it seems more 'colourful'. There's a wider variety of sounds on it, which with my synesthesia thing going on, makes it seem a bit more visually exciting to me (if you can describe an album that way without sounding bonkers). And some Neil Young influenced guitar solos seem to be sneaking their way in.

In other news, I'm watching Saturday Night with Jonathan Ross. Jools Holland is on. I'd like to go for a pint with him one day, he seems like an interesting fella. He's got a slightly squeaky voice too, which I like.
